The Crest of the Family of Boucher
The crest as engraved upon this Victorian English Sterling Silver Cast Bottle Stopper
by William Hunter hallmarked London 1868 is that of the family of Boucher. It may
be blazoned as follows:
Crest: An old man's head in profile couped at the shoulders
proper on the head a cap turned down in front [……?......]
This crest and its close variants has historically been used by families bearing the
surname of Boucher/Bourcher/Bourchier.
This is the plain variant of the crest as other families bearing the name bear a like crest,
but in addition to the cap worn by 'the old man' has it rising out of a ducal coronet.
This was certainly the crest as borne by the Bourchiers,
the Earls of Ewe and Essex, and the Barons Bourchier.
The duel earldom falling into extinction for want of a male heir in 1539,
whilst the barony fell into abeyance in 1646.
Undoubtedly there were gentry families who bore the name of Boucher or one of its variants
to whom this crest belonged; but owing to a dearth of genealogical information,
it is at present difficult to pin point one family or branch thereof with any exactitude.
