RARE GEORGE I / II YEWWOOD "SIDEBOARD TYPE" LOW OPEN DRESSER

English or Welsh, c1720-40

Rare George I-II Yewwood 'Sideboard Type' Open Low Dresser, England or Wales, c1720-40

With rich color, as well as good figuration and patination,
the case with pegged mortise and tenon construction,
having the usual long rectangular form with a moulded top over a conforming case
with two deep cockbeaded drawers centering two small drawers (possibly for 'spices')
over a small rectangular drawer, below a deep upper frieze and a deep apron shaped and
pierced with hearts, circles and trefoils, centering carved palm trees and another trefoil;
raised on front cabriole legs with shaped knee returns, and ending in pad feet,
the back legs of straight stile form; paneled sides

Condition : Excellent for age and usage; the usual nicks and irregularities of timber of this age,
including some shrinkage and abrasions, evidence of scattered past worming;

some repairs and small timber replacements to drawer interiors, with combination of early nail types;
left back top corner with staining; left rear leg with extension; replaced brasses

Note :
Although often referred to as "Welsh dressers",
these dressers were made in most areas of Wales, Scotland, and England.
The vast majority of these dressers are oak, the most desirably with good patina and color.
Some few dressers are found in fruitwoods, elm and, rarely, yew wood.
It is with great pleasure we offer this rare example of figured yewwood
with early and well-patinated surfaces.
In Victor Chinnery's scholarly "Oak Furniture", he devotes only two paragraphs to the
"open low dresser", in which he comments that the low open form seldom had "racks",
as they would have appeared "ungainly".
However such might have been later applied, or as shelves secured to the wall above
