Good Pair of George II Cast Silver Rococo Candlesticks, John Cafe, London,1755

 

The elaborately decorated square based cast rococo candlesticks with knopped stems,
having fine rope twist (cording) to the shaped nozzle and lower annulated knop,
the flaring square bases stepped and having four shell corners; original shell-edged bobeches

 

Condition : Excellent with very minor wear; maker's and lion passant marks to nozzles rubbed;

one nozzle marked, the other apparently polished out;

crisp marks verso, with owner's initials P over S * K and pr 40=6

John Cafe was a specialist candlestick maker, who together with his brother William,

appear to have had a monopoly in candlestick trade.

John worked from 1740 until his death in 1757,

and William working until his own death in the early 1800s.
