England, c1720

George I Two-Teared Baluster Wine Glass, England, c1720

The bell bowl having a solid base with single tear
above a stem with upper annulated knop over an inverted baluster
with a further tear, and a basal knop,
the foot, domed and folded; snapped pontil; collector's marks and numbers verso

Provenance : Sotheby's June 1970, The Harding Collection

Of Interest : The inverted baluster is considered the most comfortable to hold in the hand.

Condition : Excellent without chips, cracks or restoration;
light and minor wear appropriate to age and usage.

A personal note regarding early baluster glasses :

There are various theories about the thinness of the wine glass rim, and how this affects the taste.

Personally I find these early 18th century English heavier walled glasses mysteriously

impart a softness and mellowness to their contents.

This has been consistent from all liqueurs to both red and white wines.

Each experience has been quite enjoyable - and entreats "one more glass please".

6.5" High, The Rim 3" Wide, The Foot 3" Wide
