RARE GEORGE II COMPOSITE STEM GLASS CANDLESTICK

England, c1740

Rare George II Composite Stem Glass Candlestick, England, c1740

Of rare large size and heavy weight,

the vetically ribbed deep sconce having wide drip pan,
and continuing into shallow beaded knop,

raised on short rudimentary cushioned stem over an inverted Silesian stem,

having lower annulated rings and a further beaded baluster knop,
all raised on a moulded high domed helmet foot with snapped pontil

Ref :

A similar glass in green is pictured, "The Golden Age of Glass, 1650-1775",

Dwight P. Lanman, p. 232-3, Pl. 81 :

"Vertically ribbed nozzle with 8 ribs, hollow inverted baluster at top and base of stem;

domed panel moulded (8 panels) foot with pyramid diamonds at the shoulder;
plain unfolded footrim; rough pontil in green lead glass."

Note :

All 18th century glass candlesticks are 10-20 times rarer than drinking glasses with similar forms.

The moulded Silesian stemmed candlestick has a heavier stem and base, making it more stable.

Condition : Excellent overall with several dirt inclusions,
including the foot and rudimentary stem section

10.25" High / 5.5" The Foot / 4" The Nozzle / 23.5 oz.
