YOU'RE MY "CUP OF LOVE AND OF LIFE" :
& MAKE MY HEART STRINGS SOFTLY QUIVER :
Chinese Export Porcelain "VALENTINE PATTERN" Tankard
Early Qianlong, c1745-50, 5.5" High
The "Valentine Pattern" porcelain service,
with its "two kissing doves"
perched on a "Cupid's bow and quiver of arrows",
and it's "two flaming hearts"
atop the "altar of love",
is "dedicated to love".
The service was originally commissioned for England's Commodore George Anson
in recognition of his arduous circumnavigation of the world, 1740-44.
In 1743, after crossing the Pacific, Anson harbored at Canton for supplies.
There he and his
crew assisted in saving Canton from destruction by an ongoing fire.
In appreciation, the
"Valentine Pattern" service was commissioned for Anson,
depicting many things Anson had loved and longed for during the long voyage.
WISHING YOU A VERY SPECIAL DAY
with your
VERY "FAVORITE FLAME"!
