An almost identical mug, but decorated purely in underglaze blue,

is shown in fig. 21 in Tankards and Mugs, Jorge Welsh, 2016,

as well as p.21, Pl. 25, Chinese Porcelain, Duncan MacIntosh, 1994.

For an indentical tankard :

"Works of Art from the Morpurgo Collection", Sotheby's London, Nov. 2018, lot 55

The globular form with straight neck is said to derive from a medieval Middle Eastern prototype.

This form is also seen in 16th-17th century metalwares and salt glaze ceramics of the West.

Thus, these Kangxi period (1662-1722) "tankards" are said to be representative

of the strength of foreign influences entering China at that time.

Many of these "tankards" appear to be made for the Chinese market,

rather than only for export to the West.

And though this form bears the Western name "tankard",

it has been suggested that these vessels, in China,

might also have been used for 'watering plants'.
