In honor of St. Patrick's Day... ...this sugar to be taken from an Irish Sugar Basket, rare and fine
With pierced pales, garlands and swags, and a finely cast handle, crested with a wyvern with wings addorsed, made quite rare by its pedestal foot. Click here - or the image - for a wee peek. (SOLD)
Ireland has been a large producer of beet sugar since 1925. In 2006, the last of the Irish sugar beet factories was closed, due to a European Commission report that the sugar beet business was no longer profitable. The closure adversely affected thousands of growers and factory employees throughout Ireland, not only financially, but forcing them to import their sugar at increased costs. Recent findings have proved the closure may have been unnecessary after all - opening the way for the sugar beet to return to Ireland, bringing with it not only jobs and profit....but Irish "Sugar, Sugar". The Irish are currently raising funds and hope to be in production of by 2017. We wish them God Speed, and success! Beannacht Déleat.
"Sugar, Sugar" was written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim. It was performed by The Archies, and became the number one single in 1969. It lists at number 73 in Billboard's Greatest Songs of All Time. We borrowed only a few lines. But I am certain you all can sing it by heart! .
