STRAIGHT* SET GEORGE I / II SILVER PISTOL DINNER & DESSERT KNIVES
England, Second Quarter 18th Century, Maker’s Mark Rubbed
Consisting of 11 dinner knives, & 12 dessert knives :
Each haft marked with a lion passant in an oval unshaped punch one dessert knife with a rubbed maker's mark, possibly SD or SP in an oval punch; 19th century carbon steel blades of modified scimitar form; 22 crested en suite with a demi-lion rampant (Fairbairn’s Pl. 10.2); one dessert knife with a slightly differing form, original blade and crested with a goat statant eating a plant
The lion passant mark is consistent with London marks c1720-29. There is a maker’s mark on one dessert knife only. It appears to be an indistinct SD or SP. Marking of only one haft is a set is consistent with British silver knives from this period.
This knife form is described by Peter Brown, British Cutlery, p.102, figure c, as being "well balanced....and of simple, pleasing appearance and well deserving of the award of 'prime knife' (and fork) of the first half of the 18th century". The original 'prime blades' would have been slightly broader at the tip.

Condition : Excellent, and with little of the usual damage found to knives – two dinner blades and one dessert blade with nibbles to the edge; the blades 19th century carbon steel replacements of a compatible scimitar form; one dessert knife with the original scimitar form
