VICTORIAN SILVER TRUMPET FORM DOUTER
S. Mordan and Co, London 1899

Of hunting form, the segmented shaft flaring smoothly to a trumpet-form end,
also with banded mouthpiece; marked to the shaft

Douters are very helpful in extinguishing candles that are otherwise hard to reach.
They eliminate the spray of hot tallow.
Their form length makes them easier to use than the scissor or hooded forms.

Sampson Mordan (eventually S. Mordan & Co.), are known worldwide as makers of

the first propelling pencil (ever-pointed pencil) in 1822.

In addition they specialized in a great diversity of original, and in all cases,
very stylish small items.….

"Probably the most sought after examples of Mordans' works are the novelty pencils which
came in many different forms, some were made in the shape of weapons like swords, pistols or rifles,
others in the shape of animals such as pigs, owls or a ducks head,
yet others where in the form of a figure of a person.
Some of these designs can be seen in other Mordan items such as seals and menu holders.
No matter their form or function all of the products produced by

S. Mordan and Co were noted for their quality,
design and ingenuity, which is why they are the objects of many."

The company was liquidated in 1952, but leaving a fine legacy behind.
