FINE & RARE WILLIAM & MARY WALNUT CRESTED CUSHION MIRROR
England, c1690

|
Of quite large size,
the well figured walnut wall mirror retaining the
original rectangular shallow-beveled Vauxhall* glass plate
within in a cushion-moulded surround with sectionally-veneered cross-grain moulding
surmounted by the original tenoned arched and pierced crest,
the cut-out floral and foliate designs creating contrasting light and dark areas
Note : The vast majority of cushion frames are listed "formerly with crest",
having lost their crests many years hence, due to their breakage and overall fragility.
It is indeed quite rare to find a mirror of this period of this size,
and with original cresting,
as well as original plate.
Condition: The mirror plate with the expected degradation and losses;
the frame in excellent condition with normal small separations and shrinkage cracks;
the deal mirror-back appears original with the securing slips likely replaced.
43" High x 27.5" Wide (Overall)

* This early plate is now generally referred to as "Vauxhall plate".
In 1677, the Duke of Buckingham brought Venetian workmen to Lambeth, London,
just north of Vauxhall Gardens. This site had a history of glassmaking dating back to 1612.
According to diarist John Evelyn, 1620-1706,
the Vauxhall area's late 17th century glass was quite exceptional :
"they make huge vases of metal (glass), as clear, thick and ponderous as crystal,
also looking-glasses far finer and larger than any that came from Venice" .
Similarly designed late 17th century cushion mirrors with pierced cresting are shown :
English Furniture, 1660-1714, Charles II to Queen Anne (Bowett),
p.294-5,
9.43, 9.44, both with central pierced foliate spray;
The Mirror Book (Schiffer), p.28-9. no. 37
