Rare Ming Dynasty Kraak Charger, Centering 2 Phoenix, Symbol of the Empress of China. c1610-30 

 

The round slightly barded border having a flat rim, the center painted in a soft blue
with two long-tailed phoenix, the symbol of the Empress of China,
within a complex diapered border,
the rim with large rounded panels of sunflowers and precious objects
alternating with small panels of ribbons between diapering;
the underside with large circles of jewels between narrow panels of stylized lingzhi (sacred mushrooms).

 

"The phoenix, symbol of the Empress of China, is rarely depicted on Kraak porcelain.

When it appears, it is almost always on dishes with this border

The phoenix is also the Chinese symbol of peace and refinement.
The border of this group, having the sunflower panels,
are of the class depicted in 17th century Dutch still-life paintings.

 

Condition : Excellent, with usual rim fritting and sand adhesions verso
