QUEEN ANNE / GEORGE I WALNUT "WRITING CHAIR"
England, c1710-1715
A very early rare example known as a "writing chair", somewhat similar and a predecessor to the better known "corner chair", having a round seat rail supported by 2 front and 2 rear cabriole legs, (rather than the single cabriole leg to the front), the “ox-yoke” curved arm ending in rounded outscrolling handholds and surmounted by an overscroll crest block, above 2 curving cylindrical stiles and 2 vasiform splats centering a single center cylindrical support, the cabriole legs ending in pad feet; needlework covered slip seat; possibly provincial
Condition : Excellent for age, with old repairs to the knees and splat/seatrail juncture; a rare example
Note : "Writing chairs" are discussed in The Dictionary of British Furniture, MacQuoid and Edwards, where two slightly later such chairs are shown with wooden shield form backs and similar round seatrails and leg placements terminating in ball and claw feet (Figures 91 & 92, dated c1720 and c1730). Also shown are two examples dating c1735 and 1740, in which the seats are serpentine compass-form, with the carved cabriole legs placed at the center front, back and on the sides (Figures 93 & 94).
Writing chairs are also akin to "reading chairs", in which the seating is toward the backrail, and often having an adjustable reading easel mounted to the armrail.
