PAIR KANGXI CHINESE EXPORT "HUNTING SCENE" LARGE PLATES

China, c1690-1710

 

 

 

 

The round plates painted in underglaze blue, each centering a landscape with two Chinese archers on horseback,

a third riding beside, led by the hunting dog, all within two concentric circles,

the flattened rim painted with leiwen border having lobed blue-bordered reserves of flowerheads and foliate sprays; the verso centering a ”conch” within concentric circles,

the rims having wash-painted vignettes of rocky shorelines with pagodas,

a motif used on good quality blue and white and famille verte plates c1700
 

Provenance : Portland Museum of Art, Portland Oregon

Condition : Excellent; each with minor rim frits and usual kiln flaws present in Kangxi porcelain; one with a tight amalgamated cavetto hairline, visible only verso; good ring when tapped
