George I Walnut & Oyster-Veneered Walnut Bureau, England 1720

 

Retaining rich color and patination,
the fall front with oyster-veneering surrounded by a large and a narrow row of banding,
above two short and three long graduated drawers having two panels of figured walnut

set further within striated cross-banding, the whole raised on shaped bracket feet;
the fall front with a small baize writing surface and an interior with stepped fittings,

the center prospect door, sided by two 'inlaid' column-and-capital vertical hidden drawers

and opening to a parquetry stair-stepped drawer;

the top with parquetry inlay;

mounted with engraved antique brasses correct to period

Condition : Overall very good condition;

as expected, some rolling and cracking and small replacements to veneers;

veneers replacet to the feet;

vertical shrinkage crack to left side;

staining, abrasions and restorations to the interior fittings and surfaces;

the brasses changed, the filled holes showing on the top two drawers,

the others covered by the current antique engraved brasses; formerly with side handles';
