England, c1720-30, Unmarked

The oval body and cover finely and intricately engraved with acanthus leaves and shells on a hatched ground,

the front centering a vacant shield-form cartouche below the thumb-lift,

the backside an elaborate shell beneath the hinge,

the cover and base each inset with heavy oval polished agate panels

Condition : Excellent; the hinge in good order; natural inclusions to the stones;

no evidence of previous monogram or removal to the small cartouche

Note : There are two sizes for snuff boxes :

a smaller version for carrying on the person, usually in a small pocket inside the waistcoat

to keep the tobacco next to the body for warmth and aroma;

and a larger version passed around the table at gatherings or after meals.
