GEORGE I HIGHLY FIGURED BURR ELMWOOD & FRUITWOOD KNEEHOLE DESK
England, c1725

The quite dramatic wood with wonderful figuration and
color,
having a rectangular case with cross-banded book-matched top
with canted front corners,
over a long frieze cockbeaded drawer and two
tiers of three graduated drawers
centering a “prospect” (kneehole
recess) fitted with a cupboard door,
each side tier of drawers
raised on bracket feet and an angular shaped apron;
retaining two
keys and the original brasses
Condition : Excellent, with minor old repairs appropriate to
age and usage;
the closed batwing brasses original
(what appears to be an imprint of a different brass on the top center
drawer is wood figuration);
several interior blocks replaced
Note :
These small chests were
supposedly introduced as dressing tables, finding additional bedroom
use as desks.
Personally, I find them among the most
beautiful, with the most appealing proportions, of all early British
furniture --
preferring this early period to the later mahogany
versions.
Reputedly, the "prospect door" was named after the
"view", as one would perceive through the upright trees
(the two
side tiers of drawers) to the grounds.
29" High x 30" Wide x 19 1/4" Deep
