GEORGE I CARVED WALNUT OPEN ARMCHAIR

England, c1720

 

 

A good early 18th century open armchair, of fine form and generous proportions,
retaining early surfaces with rich color and patination;
the solid vasiform splat with a shaped crest, joined by scrolling stiles which
descend into raked block and turned back legs;
the s-curved arms ending in outscrolling handholds with curved supports, and siding a trapezoidal seat;
the front legs with well carved acanthus leaves and scrolled knee returns;
block and turned stretchers; peg construction
