GEORGE IV MAHOGANY ADJUSTABLE FOLIO STAND
Attributed to Gillows / England, c1820-30

|
The H-form stand with two adjustable (hinged) rectangular trellis-work rests,
the outer uprights of tapering form and extending into graceful curved supports
connecting to a turned handle bar and ratchet supports,
resting on two tapering uprights above ratcheted horizontal legs
ending in reeded brass caps and swivel casters
A quite similar design appears in Gillows' 1820 "Estimate Sketch Book", pl.307
(shown below)..
The minor variations are the placement of reeding on the turned bar handle, and the shape of the outer supports.
Another similar example, also attributed to Gillows, c1820, is in the collection of Nostell Priory, West Yorkshire.
Note : I have long been fond of the trellis - and "transformer-" like form of folio stands.
But apparently not all agree.
I must quote this amusing description from "British Antique Furniture", John Andrews, Pl. 663 :
"Quite a different sort - a folio stand,
the type that picture dealers have to have for unmounted prints, drawings and watercolours.
A heavy utilitarian example which always seems to be in demand, no matter how ugly."
Condition : Excellent with minor old chips, knocks, marks and scratches appropriate to age and usage;
with a repolish having good color and some patination.
Also of note is the lovely vertical light-dark striation of the end trellis upright
and to the lower uprights on each side
42.25" High x 28.25" Wide x 34.25" Deep
