The silver box having a base of moulded heart shape,
the top having a smaller silver-mounted striated agate hinged and flanged cover
above a floral and foliate chased surround,
the sides reeded and the interior gilt;
bearing maker's mark only on the base interior
Lewis Morel, Goldsmith of St Mary Islington Middlesex.
Free Dec. 7, 1748, first mark registered 1737 (Grimwade 1944),
with first address Salisbury Court.
A silver snuff box, 1742, by Morel, formed as three connected cartouches,
engraved with the arms of Castillo & Leon, Portugal and Scotland;
Christie's, King Street, London,
'An Iberian Private Collection Part II', December 2011, lot 466; sold 9375 pounds
Provenance and Literature :
John Culme, "British Silver Boxes 1640-1840, The Lion Collection", p. 133, Coll. no. 137,
a collection which had
"been distilled to include only the most interesting, rare and varied of antique British silver boxes".
Condition : Excellent with minor wear to chasing;
a few minor wavy spots to cover interior rim; some residual tarnishing
