Of heavy gauge silver with planishing marks showing, the tapering body with fold-over rim and bold foot,
chased in accord his earlier Queen Anne manner of decoration,
the lower half with alternating flutes and lobes below a band of crosslets,
the upper section with high relief rope twist cording between further crosslets;
fully marked below the rim : Grimwade 1058, HP in a quatrefoil, device above, mullet below, reg. 1739
Humphrey Payne apprenticed to Roger Grange and Thomas Parr, Free in November 1701.
Payne died in 1751, the same day as Paul de Lamerie, the notice also appearing in the 'London Evening Post' :
"Last Friday died at Daventry in Northamptonshire, Mr. Humphrey Paine, formerly an eminent Goldsmith
at the Hens and Chickens in Cheapside, but having acquired a handsome Fortune,
he quitted trade to his Son a few Months ago, to whom he has left the Bulk of his Estate".
Condition : Excellent; several small dents in upper section; a tiny split to the fold-over rim;
the rim slightly out of round
