GEORGE II JACOBITE WAISTED BUCKET BOWL WINE GLASS

England, c1750

A surprisingly lovely and delicate glass with unusual form,
the waisted bucket bowl engraved with open rose head and single bud,
raised on a straight stem with tight multi-airtwist above a domed circular foot

Note : The waisted bucket is apparently comparatively rare,

Seddon in his Appendix, reporting only 5 examples examined out of 472 drinking glasses.
("The Jacobites and their Drinking Glasses")

According to W. Horridge, and J. Barrington Hayes, the roses and buds have been interpreted variously.
The fully opened rose : as the Old Pretender James III, or the Crown of England;
The partially opened bud : generally for Prince Charles.,
but in some occasions with two buds, for the Old Pretender;
The unopened bud : (with a single bud) for the Old Pretender James III, or Prince Charles;
(with two buds) for the Old Pretender James III, or Prince Henry;
(Seddon, "The Jacobites & their Drinking Glasses")

Condition : Excellent, no flaws found; lovely to hold

6.5" High, The Bowl 2.5" Wide, The Foot 3" Wide
