EARLY GEORGE II IRISH MAHOGANY OPEN ARM CHAIR

Of generous proportions, the shaped crest rail centered by a concave paperscroll, extending down to

out-scrolled stiles carved at the top with scrolls above short vines, siding a pierced splat with 3 floral carved

circular connectors, the out-scrolled arms dished at the elbow ending in scroll-carved handholds, the front seat rail

with a central double-drop, trapezoidal slip seat, raised on carved acanthus-headed cabriole legs terminating in ball

and claw feet, H-stretchers; peg construction

Provenance: Estate of Glen S. Foster

 

Condition: Normal wear for the age: front right seat rail with an old glued crack from top of rail to peg,

and reglued joint; center stretcher reset; left arm reset; replaced rear blocks;

 the finish having good age; old worming holes (inactive)

 

Note: The late use of the cross stretcher, the square cut to the ball and claw foot, and lengthy

carving to the knees are all indicators of Irish origins
