GEORGE II FIRING GLASS

England, c1750

 

 

The drawn funnel shaped bowl above a short thick short raised on a round thick flanged foot;

snapped pontil

 

Firing glasses were used in the Georgian period for post-dining gatherings of gentlemen, who sang songs and told stories – most of which received applause or announcement by rapping glasses on the table top. 

This sound resembled gunshots – thus the name “firing glass”. 

The thick short shaft and heavy footrim was needed for survival.

 

Condition : Excellent, with small scratch on glass side, visible in images
