GEORGE III PORTRAIT-MOUNTED TORTOISESHELL TOBACCO BOX

England, c1790

The round tortoiseshell box with a lift-off cover, the cover slightly domed centering an oval  gold mounted (tested) portrait on ivory of a Commander in uniform beneath a glass covering, opening to a plain interior

Note :

Old enclosed papers dating to 1941 attribute the personage to Lord Nelson.  We feel that this is unlikely.  The officer is pictured with one epaulet on the left shoulder, which indicates “Commander”, one rank beneath Captain.  It is more likely a special order for family member.

Condition : Excellent; some dust below glass; slight spotting to painting

2-7/8” Diameter x 7/8” High
