George III Facet Cut Engraved Wine with 6-Petal Cut Foot, England, c1770-80

 

The ogee bowl with everted rim and engraved to
the upper half with grape leaves and polished concave clusters of grapes
above basal cutting as 6 petals issuing 6 small leaves,
descending to a 6-sided facet-cut stem with central knop,
raised on a scalloped and facet foot cut having 6 lobes,
further cut below with six arches and points; polished pontil;

collector's number 110 in enamel verso

 

Note : Probable Jacobite association :

These glasses blown and cut with Stuart six petal rose-shaped feet were apocryphal,

so that as only one drank from the glass and turned it upward,

their Stuart allegiance in the form of 6-petaled roses would be displayed.

 

Condition : Two small filled slice chips beneath the foot (more usual than not on petal feet);

otherwise excellent
