GEORGE III DIMINUTIVE MAHOGANY CHEST OF DRAWERS

England, c1765

Attributed to Thomas Chippendale

A quite stylish diminutive chest of drawers, attributed to cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale,
having a rectangular moulded top

above an unusual arrangement of four short and two long graduated drawers;,
retaining the original surfaces and brasses, and raised on shaped bracket feet;
red wash to the underside; laminated blocks to the feet; s-shaped keyholes

This particular chest shares similar features with a group of documented chests believed to be by Thomas Chippendale,

as supplied to Dumfries House, Ayrshire, and catalogued for Christie's proposed contents sale of Dumfries House,

12-13 July 2007 : lots 106, 153, 213, 242, 251, 252.

Although there are extant bills from Chippendale for furniture at Dumfries house in which the above mentioned group

of chests are not listed, yet are indeed tentatively attributed to him on the grounds of certain constructional traits

as seen on this chest :
the laminated blocking behind each bracket foot,

the red wash to the back and underside;

asymmetrical keyholes.
The case for the Dumfries chests being by Chippendale is supported by the linen press at the house

which shares these features with the aforementioned group of chests.

A Chippendale bill dated 1763 is thought to refer to the linen press and thus establishes the link to Chippendale.
(see Christies proposed contents sale of Dumfries House, 12-13 July 2007, lot 236)

Condition : Excellent timbers, surface and patina; original brasses; typical shrinkage separation / crack to each side;

slight bow and expected staining to a top with original surfaces

33" High, 33" Wide, 21.25" Deep
