GEORGE II / III SILVER-MOUNTED ARMORIAL COWRIE SHELL SNUFF BOX

The large ovoid cowrie shell with substantial silver mounts,
the cartouche-form hinged cover with elaborate embossed and chased rococo shell and scroll
decorations centering a coat of arms beneath a viscount's coronet
(the arms to be identified);
the interior gilt, silver with maker's mark only ; WL fish above, the fish poorly struck
Notes :
"Poll of City & Liberty of Westminster taken at Covent Garden 22 November to 8 December 1749
gives a William LE STURGEON Snuffbox Maker, St Martin Le Grand.
The "Unregistered mark" in Grimwade, #3873, lists WL a fish above, listed as 'unidentified',
(as found on a 1757 tobacco box, 1764 tray and 1765 mustard pot)
This mark likely appears in the lost '1739-1758 Smallworkers' Register'.
William entered into partnership with Aaron Lestourgeon in 1767.
This partnership was well known for its fine quality,
and a supplier for the prestigious London firm Wakelin & Parker
Condition : Excellent, the shell with only a few minor scratches;
the silver with very minor wear to high points only;
makers marks with polishing wear; hinge in good condition and closure firm
