EARLY GEORGE III FLUTED SILVER QUART TANKARD
William Grundy, London, 1761

|
Of heavy gauge silver,
the large straight tapering quart tankard with two bands of shallow flutes
alternating with two bands of punched crosslets and quatrefoils,
centering an asymmetrical rococo cartouche with contemporary conjoined initials FSG,
the S-scroll handle tongue capped; raised on a spreading foot; mark Grimwade #3147
Note : Often the use of shallow flutes strengthened the body, enabling a lighter gauge silver to be used.
However this tankard is of a very good gauge.
Condition : Excellent, with clear marks; sits well on table; small depression in handle at end of tongue, (use) ;
expected small surface scratches and nicks appropriate to age and usage; no thinning or depression beneath monogram;
the marks struck above the rim crosslets,
most evident with the letter 'f', and the right side of the crowned leopard over the crosslet base,
indicating the decoration as original

6.25" High / 4" Wide at Rim / 5" Wide at Base / 20.6 oz.
