CHARLES II BEADWORK & STUMPWORK FRAMED PANEL
England, c1670
|
The rectangular panel of glass beadwork having stumpwork accents,
the panel divided into 12 bordered squares, depicting as follows :
1st Row : a griffin, a winged angel, a mermaid, and a parrot;
2nd Row : a blue thistle, a hunter with his game, a maiden, and a tree;
3rd Row : a unicorn, a sunflower; a tree lined garden; and a lion.
The faces of silk-covered stumpwork with embroidered details
Notes : One of the nicest aspects of beadwork embroidery is the full retention of color,
through time and exposure to light, as opposed to the fading and erosion of fabric embroideries.
This example is somewhat unusual in its depiction within squares.
It is a technique generally seen in single panels framing 17th century small mirror plates.
The original intent has been suggested as a basket base, due to the wire supports and use of squares,
also appearing around basket sides.
The beads were likely obtained from Murano, Italy.
Condition : Excellent for age, with scattered minor bead loss along the frame edge
and in the lower right corner; expected light fading to the silk threads on faces
Image Size : 10.25" x 13.25"; Framed Size : 12.75" x 16.75"
