M. FORD CREECH ANTIQUES

WILLIAM III / QUEEN ANNE WALNUT SIDE CHAIR,

with Iberian Influence

England, c1700-1710

An early high-backed form having Iberian influence, the top rail with the rectangular convex cresting,

surmounting a cyma-curved vasiform splat pierced at the top, above an upholstered stuff-over seat raised

 on front “hipped” cabriole legs with squared knees and ending in pad feet, well formed serpentine

stretchers connecting to the rear legs, which are joined by a further baluster turned stretcher

Note: This particular form is somewhat rare and dated by construction. The stretcher and hipped

cabriole legs with squared knees reflect Iberian (Spanish & Portuguese) influence.  The vacant space

between the stuff-over seat and the back disappeared in England about 1710, with the cabriole leg

coming into England at about 1700.

Condition: Very good to excellent, with several very well done old repairs, including the stretcher, with some

remaining roughness at one rear joint; both rear block legs (end repair); each front pad foot toes;

knee returns probably replaced (very well matched); very tight, strong, and ready for use
