RARE WILLIAM & MARY WALNUT & YEWWOOD CANED CHILD'S HIGH CHAIR

England, c1695

 

 

The high arched back with molded and scroll-carved pierced cresting over a caned center panel sided by molded stiles above a caned seat with shaped from seat rail and between scroll ended open arms, the baluster-turned front arm supports over spool turned front legs ending in grooved Spanish ("Braganza") feet, the turned back legs joined by a turned mid-stretcher and lower H-turned stretcher, the adjustable footrest and safety crossbar later additions (oak)

 

Provenance : By repute, brokered by Israel Sack to the previous owner. 

 (Israel Sack was a dealer in fine American furniture, but on occasion, was known to broker English pieces upon request.)

 

Condition : Wear appropriate to age and usage; shrinkage to right stile, so the back slightly out of plumb; restoration to right stile and left front foot;

 lower stretcher a replacement; caning new but with good color and patination; footrest and safety crossbar 19c additions

(at this time, the child would have been held in place by a simple tied cloth)
