VICTORIAN SILVER THIMBLE-FORM TOT BEAKER
In Original Leather Case

A “novelty” tot beaker, the small cup in the form of a thimble, the base enameled in blue "JUST A THIMBLEFUL", & inscribed "Walter Fergus Esquire, Largs, 19th Jan.y 1877", in its original silk-lined leather case marked "Sorley (Late Jaffray) Glasgow" beneath a crown* Fully marked : BHJ, Birmingham,1876
*The business of Sorley, 1 Buchannan Street and 136 Argyle Street, Glasgow, dates to 1840, being originally established by Mr. William Jaffray. Jaffray was succeeded by Robert Sorley, who then purchased a business carried on by Mr. Shaw, Gordon Street, and amalgamated the two. It became one of the largest and most influential high-end jewelry and silversmith establishments in Glasgow. Sorley had the honor of designing and making the gold casket presented by the Corporation of the City of Glasgow to Her Majesty the Queen on her visit to Glasgow, as well as the gold key presented to the Queen on the opening of the New Municipal Buildings. Condition : The cup excellent; the leather to the case worn, as expected
Note : Tot cups are small cups, usually footed as a beaker, and dram size (about two inches). These, like stirrup cups, were often handed to riders before or after a hunt. This is a “novelty version, footless as are stirrup cups, and meant to be drunk without putting the vessel down.
