 UNUSUAL GEORGE II WALNUT LIBRARY OPEN ARMCHAIR

Great Britain, Probably Provincial and Attributed to Alexander Peter, c1740-50

 

 

Of most unusual form, the walnut framed upright back somewhat reminiscent of the earlier “backstool” form, the arched crestrail sided by two c-curves with carved circlets, over a square seat sided by curved overscrolling arms on curved supports, the handholds with further carved circlets to each side; raised on four lappet-headed tapering legs ending in pad feet, connected by block and turned stretchers;

recently upholstered in vegetal dyed olive leather with close-headed tacks;

very high quality in design and timber; probably provincial and Scotland;

the design characteristics are usually associated with Alexander Peter,

who with Thomas Chippendale, supplied the furnishings

for Dumfries House, Scotland, 1754-59

 

Condition : Excellent with normal nicks and wear appropriate to age and usage
