Of heavy gauge silver, each with a rattail attachment to the bowl and strong upper ridge to the shaft, the upturned terminals initialed en suite D * S
Marks : Joseph Smith I, Grimwade #2586, mark registered in 1707 William Mathew I, rare mark of W over MA, Grimwade #3233, mark registered 1712, and noted in Grimwade p. 229 and 593 : “a rare occurrence of a Christian initial over a ‘New Standard’ maker’s mark”
Note : The Hanoverian pattern was introduced from the Continent into England c1710, and became the pattern of choice at the beginning of the reign of George I ( of Hanover) in 1714 - thenceforth carrying the name “Hanoverian”.. This was an early period for sets of flatware - still at a time when it was likely only to order a set of 6 – that set being added to in as needed.
Condition : Excellent; very heavy gauge and without bowl tip wear
Each 7-7/8” Long / Total Weight : 8.8 oz.
