PAIR GEORGE II / III CAST & PIERCED SILVER SUGAR TONGS

The cast and pierced sugar nips constructed in three parts (each arm and the hilt), the joins visible in the images, of usual U-shaped form,

the reeded hilt engraved  L over H * M joined on each end to arms with interlocking circles and ovals ending in shell grips,

the grips interior possibly gilt at one time; marked with a W.C on the hilt interior, and a lion passant to the interior of one arm

 

Condition : Excellent, with two minor cracks probably in the making, each stable and without a repair.

Cast and pierced tongs were made for only a short period during 3rd quarter of the 18th century,

probably due to their extreme fragility.  Most are severely damaged and repaired.
