RARE PAIR OF GEORGE III SILVER MARROW SCOOPS

Thomas & William Chawner, London, c1768

Crested for Barons Craven

Of usual double ended form, the shaft with a Feather-Edge, the large bowl verso crested for Baron’s Craven

a chapeau gules turned up ermine a griffin statant wings elevated ermine beak and foremembered or, the crest is ensigned with the coronet of a Baron.

Given the dating, the pair of scoops was undoubtedly at one time in the ownership of William, the 5th Baron Craven or his nephew and successor, William, the 6th Baron Craven.

William Craven, the 5th baron was born on the 19th September 1705. He succeeded to the family title upon the death of his cousin, Fulwar, the 4th baron in 1764. Although William (5th baron) married on the 27th April 1749, Jane, daughter of Rowland Berkeley, of Cotheridge in the County of Worcester they had no children so when William died on the 17th March 1769, the barony of Craven was inherited by his nephew, William (6th baron). William (5th baron) had served as High Steward of Newbury in the County of Berkshire which was the nearest town to the Craven family seat of Hampstead Marshall. His nephew, William (6th baron) was born on the 11th September 1738 and married Elizabeth, daughter of Augustus Berkeley, the 4th Earl of Berkeley on the 30th May 1767. Here we can note that it was not at all unusual at the time that both the wives of the 5th and 6th barons were cousins with a common descent from the ancient  family of  Berkeley, of Berkeley Castle in the County of Gloucester. William (6th baron) died on the 26th September 1791. He was succeeded by his eldest son, William as the 7th Baron Craven, who was subsequently created Earl of Craven, in the County of York and Viscount Uffington, in the County of Berkshire within the Peerage of the United Kingdom on the 18th June 1801.
