Ways for Collectors and Dealers to Keep It Real By Christopher Mason, The New York Times, May 22, 2008
David H. Wilson, an antiques restorer in New Jersey who consults for Christie’s, offered these tips for spotting fakes. · A 200-year-old antique should show its age: wood shrinks with the grain, separating joints, so crisp joints are suspect. · Marks from a circular saw, a product of the Industrial Revolution, indicate that the piece was produced since then. · If the wood grain is undetectable or looks muddy, someone might be trying to hide something. · Examine the inside, the underside and the back of an antique for color consistency; variations indicate that it might have been altered. · Be wary of very thin veneers; those made before about 1850 were cut by hand and are usually at least 1/16-inch thick. · Pairs of mirrors, commodes and side tables are more desirable, but make sure surfaces and undersides match; if they don’t, one piece may be a copy. · Check for signs of surface distress that seem implausible. · Dents at the top, rather than the bottom, of a chair leg, for example, indicate reused wood. When in doubt, consult an expert. Expect to pay $200 to $300 an hour, or for each item appraised.
