Ways for Collectors and Dealers to Keep It Real

By Christopher Mason, The New York Times, May 22, 2008

David H. Wilson, an antiques restorer in New Jersey who consults for Christie’s, offered these tips for spotting fakes.

      ·         A 200-year-old antique should show its age: wood shrinks with the grain, separating joints, so crisp joints are suspect.

·         Marks from a circular saw, a product of the Industrial Revolution, indicate that the piece was produced since then.

·         If the wood grain is undetectable or looks muddy, someone might be trying to hide something.

·         Examine the inside, the underside and the back of an antique for color consistency; variations indicate that it might have been altered.

·         Be wary of very thin veneers; those made before about 1850 were cut by hand and are usually at least 1/16-inch thick.

·         Pairs of mirrors, commodes and side tables are more desirable, but make sure surfaces and undersides match; if they don’t, one piece may be a copy.

·         Check for signs of surface distress that seem implausible.

·         Dents at the top, rather than the bottom, of a chair leg, for example, indicate reused wood.

When in doubt, consult an expert. Expect to pay $200 to $300 an hour, or for each item appraised.

Jonathan Looper has been in the restoration/conservation business for over twelve years. Jonathan

works with private collectors and antique dealers from around the country offering a full range of

services from preserving original finishes and patinas to complete reconstruction. Jonathan has an

intimate knowledge of furniture from understanding how wood ages to maintaining the quirky construction

techniques found on early vernacular furniture, both English and American.  His devotion to restoration

has allowed him to perfect the art of "seamless' repairs in a manner that adheres to the strict methodology

of conservation, he believes that repairs should never detract from the beauty of the art form and bad

ones have a way of ruining the greatest of pieces.
