GEORGE I GILT GESSO MIRROR with ORIGINAL VAUXHALL PLATE

England, c1720

The gilt gesso pediment centering a stylized shell and foliate relief-carved surface on a coined or pounced ground,

above burnished and relief-decorated sides and a shaped relief-carved base

 set with two period brass candlearms with stops (probably a few years later);

original engraved backplates, made to the cartouche of the frame;

the gilt original;

original rectangular shallowly beveled Vauxhall glass plate with upper re-entrant corners

Condition : Original gilt and glass;

expected small gilt flakes and stress cracks; loss to glass silvering;

several small areas of gilt rubbing to crest;

although the bevel proved impossible to photograph under photographic lights, it is indeed present
