GEORGE III UNUSUAL CAST & ENGRAVED BRASS HEARTH TRIVET

England, 18th / Early 19th Century with Plate Rack

Of quite heavy gauge brass,

the rectangular top pierced and engraved with rather a extraordinary mythical scene centering a scrolled cartouche with the head of an antlered goat, the left side with a nature spirit carrying a spear,

a dragon coiled at  his feet, the right side

with a hound pursing an antlered deer licking the nectar from a flowerhead,

all within a pierced scrolling foliate and floral ground,

over a brass-fronted iron-railed plate rack, raised four legs,

the front legs of cast brass with lion’s heads above a leg diapered with X’s enclosing circlets

and what appears to be hairy knees, ending in closed-paw lion’s feet

Note : It has been suggested that this scene is taken from an early tapestry.

Condition : Excellent; wear appropriate to age and usage, with minor expected dents and bends

10" High x 14.5" Wide 9.25" Deep
