GEORGE III SILVER SNUFFER SCISSORS & STAND :

The Stand : Peter & William Bateman, London, 1807-8

The Snuffer Scissors : WB in rectangular punch

London, 1806-7, Wilkes Booth

The rounded rectangular stand with a plain field within a raised rim having gadrooned edges, the scissor-form snuffers with a reeded pivot between gadrooned double shafts and wick box, the rectangular finger–rings reeded top and verso; raised on three button feet; scissor marks inside snuffer box

Condition : Excellent, with  minor expected surface scratches; no breaks, losses or repairs;

the snuffers with excellent tight action, marked to the box and door interior

Note :

It is somewhat rare to find matching snuffers and stands, as they were made by different specialists.  The decoration on this pair is very similar.  The previous owner purchased the set at both being by Bateman.  However, William Bateman did not work alone until 1815. The form of this mark most closely resembles Wilkes Booth, Grimwade #3027, registered 1787, with a similar one registered 1805.

Wilkes Booth was a known snuffer scissor maker.

Total Weight : 8.5 oz.

The Stand : 8.25” Long x 3.75” Deep
