GEORGE III OLD SHEFFIELD PLATE TEA TRAY

England, c1810-20

 

 

 

 

A quite large tray of rounded rectangular form, the plain field centering square of rubbed in silver with the crest of a cockerel ppr. standing on a trumpet (Acheson – Scot. & Irish – probably Arthur Acheson, 1st Earl of Gosford, Ireland);  gadrooned rims and nicely detailed floral and foliate C-scroll handles, tinned verso; rolled over edges

  

Condition : Excellent, with very slight wear to one 6" line at the high point of the cavetto next to the handle; no apparent dents, repairs or resilvering

 

 Arthur Acheson, 1st Earl of Gosford, (c1745 – 14 January 1807), known as The Viscount Gosford between 1790 and 1806, was an Irish peer of Scottish descent and politician. His birth is given the year as 1742 or 1745 with varying documents. The son of Archibald Acehson, 1st Viscount Gosford, he succeeded to the viscountcy upon the death of his father, and was subsequently created Earl of Gosford in 1806. Acheson was a Member of Parliament  (MP) for Old Leighlin from 1783 until 1791. Acheson is a Scottish name, first found in Berwikshire, Scotland, where they were seated from very ancient times.  Spellig variations incude Acheson, Acherson, Atcherson, Aitcheson, Aitchinson, Atcheson, Achison and many more
