FIRST PERIOD WORCESTER 3-SHELL PICKLE (SWEETMEAT) STAND

England, c1768

The stand modeled as three scallop shell dishes set on a triangular coral base applied with small shells rising up in the center

to a larger shell handle, the interior of the dishes painted in blue with the 'Sweetmeat Stand Rose' pattern, comprising mixed

sprays including central roses, a broad border of scales, florets and lambrequin at the rims

These stands have been attributed to modeler John Toulouse, who worked at Bow in the early 1750’s, moving to Worcester

in the mid to late 1760’s, and supposedly taking the Bow pickle stand molds with him. Real sea shells would have been

cast for the feet and for the shells embedded in the coral center, which would have been pricked with a sharp

instrument for its texture. No two stands have been found to be exactly alike.

An almost identical Worcester example was sold in the Zorensky Collection of Worcester Porcelain, Part III, 2006.

Worcester Porcelain, The Zorensky Collection, Spero & Sandon, features several of these stands.

A stand painted in polychrome enamels is shown on p. 322, where it is noted that stands of this size (7.5”) are quite unusual.

Condition : Overall excellent; several shells and one of the dishes with good restoration; several firing flaws (as tears) to the underside

stand visible in image below
