RARE EARLY GEORGE III BRASS-MOUNTED MAHOGANY BOTTLE STAND
(WINE COOLER)
England, c1765

|
Of high quality, the diminutive “wine cooler” having a square case with canted pillared corners and original rococo brass mounts, containing a conforming canted brass liner and raised on 4 molded and chamfered legs with carved fretwork corner brackets (appearing original); likely for a jeroboam; will hold 4 standard bottles
Note : These small square bottle stands were introduced in the designs of Thomas Chippendale in his 1763 Edition of The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director (Pl. LV), and also by William Ince and John Mayhew, in Universal System of Household Furniture (1762), where they are under the heading of “Tea Kettle Stands”. A similar slightly larger example appears in the Althorp Portfolio (AL16013), and on the cover of Small Antique Furniture, Bernard & Therle Hughes. Apparently, these stands were originally conceived to house and insulate tea kettles and urns for hot water. However, they proved terribly awkward and impractical to use. Their alternate use became wine coolers or cellarets.
Provenance : Stair & Co. NYC
Condition : Excellent, with fine color and patina; some minor expected veneer stress cracks and dents, which will seem much more exaggerated in photographic light; a few minor old well done repairs; replaced brass liner of heavy weight and fine quality; originally on small casters
21.5" High x 11.5" Square
