DUTCH BRASS TOBACCO BOX

The Netherlands, dated 1809

"Kees sits from early morning in the pub"

 

  

 

Rectangular box with slightly domed hinged lid, engraved with a tavern scene, sided by panels engraved "Anno 1809", and "De Kroeg" (the tavern); checkerboard engraving to the sides; the flat base inscribed between leaf panels with a 1716 Dutch song,Spagnolette Kees zit” :  “Kees sits from early morning in the pub”. 

There are 4 versions sung to this tune :

    In de-kroeg, Hy wint met

     spa en ploeg inet genoeg. 

    als een inens mee Peert ver

    Keeren, Maer hy maekt o'speyt

    In de kroeg syne teydt en onk

    menig mooye Stuyver kweyt"

 

  

Condition : Excellent; good definition to engraving; usual light spotting and tarnish residue
