 RARE PAIR OF PEARLWARE MOLDED TEABOWLS & SAUCERS

England, c1790 (Probably Staffordshire area)

  The bowls and saucers molded and fluted, and painted with scenes of the “Boy at the Door” pattern (after a Chinese original),

depicting a family on a garden terrace before pagodas and a river landscape, a boy at the open door of one pagoda;

double brown lines to the rim; saucers centering a floral spray

   Condition: Excellent; minor expected enamel wear only

Pearlware was first made by Wedgwood in 1779 in response to a comment by Lady Dartmouth that she

and her friends were tired of the creamware body. His formula contained some soaprock and traces of cobalt

oxide to achieve a white color. It provided a good base for bright colored enamels.
