"Cormorant & Magpie", Probably Swedish Market

Qianlong, c1750

 

 

Of fluted form, the center well painted in famille rose with turquoise, iron red, bianco sopra bianco and gilt in a variant of

the “Cormorant and Magpie” decoration*, with a blossoming prunus branch and lotus pads issuing further flora,

the two cormorants, one in flight, protecting their young from the intruding magpie, each in gilt and iron red;

the rim with a gilt leafy trailing vine border

 

*The” Cormorant and Magpie”, a theme emanating from the Ming Dynasty, depicts the cormorants

defending an unseen nest from the invading magpie.
