CHARLES II GLASS BEADWORK EMBROIDERY ON SILK

The lower center with a handled vase issuing elaborate flowers and foliage,
accompanied in the four corners by a stag and a unicorn above,
and a lion and a leopard below, each on a grassy mound with further flowers,
all on a cream silk ground,
and housed in an antique frame with carved gilt liner
Condition : Beading in excellent condition; the silk with age splits and some fraying to the very top edge
and the lower edge (beneath the frame rim), the rest in remarkably good condition;
the frame (c1900) with areas of abrasion
(Note on silk wear : Silk, even newer silk, splits with age.
Silk of 350 years is expected is expected to have age splits.
The silk was laid on a supporting linen or canvas quite some years ago,
both recently stitched onto another supporting ground.
