The small charming carving in the form of a maned lion's face and paws
the eyeballs having pierced and upward gazing pupils;

wonderful whimsical expression!

 

A corbel is akin to a bracket.
Corbels have been used since Roman times as both architectural support
and as decoration – particularly in church construction.
Carved timber corbels were widely used in England and the Continent
from the Medieval, the Gothic and through late Baroque periods.

 

Condition : Excellent color and patina, with wear appropriate to age;
to polish, rub gently with thumbs instead of wax
