carved fruitwood figural snuff BOX : A HUNCHBACK

Late 18th Century

 

 

 Well carved, depicting a crouching crowned figure, wearing a neck ruff, his head turned slightly to the left;

a sliding cover to the rear, a stopper to the underside;

possibly a representation of Richard III - often referred to as hunchback, but actually had scoliosis

 

Ref : Pinto, Edward H.; Treen & Other Wooden Bygones, 1985;

a similar figure is illustrated, Plate 368 - S
“...human and animal snuff boxes, Plate 368, much sought after by collectors,

are of carved wood. S… a little hunchback. …Most of these are 18th century.”( p. 350 )

 

Condition: Very good with wear appropriate to age and usage
